This kit is based on the glorious art-deco cinema in Aberfeldy. Opened in 1939 and named the “BIRKS” after the local name for birch trees. A stalwart presence in the Perthshire town for many years until it declined (with many other local cinemas) and closed as a cinema in 1982 leading to use as a bingo hall and amusement arcade and eventual closure in 2004. However, the community rallied around, won significant funds for its major renovation and reopened in 2013. 

Visit the cinema for your favourite blockbuster or just sample the café – it is worth a visit. 

*The kit comes in 2 parts:

·        A kit of just the frontage (low relief) of the cinema (2xA4 laser cut 3mm plywood sheets (1x0.8mm))

·        An add on kit to add the back to complete the full building (4xA4 laser cut 3mm plywood sheets (1x0.8mm))

This bespoke model has been designed in 1/76 scale to represent this wonderful example of an art deco cinema building that will enhance any townscape in your layout.

The building requires glue. Choose a glue that allows at least a minute before setting to allow adjustments to be made during the build. Always test the build before using glue.

For finishing, we recommend first priming the surface, then painting with any acrylic or model paint of your choice. The material is etched, so any engraved detail such as brickwork or roof tiles will be visible after painting.

Important Information About Railway Scaling

All dimension drawings are supplied in OO gauge.

All kits are designed in OO gauge using 3 mm plywood. When scaling the digital files to other gauges, there are a few considerations to take into account. The instructions supplied with your kit will be the OO gauge version, as the build order remains the same across the different scales.

TT:120 Gauge:
All TT:120 gauge kits are scaled to 66% of the size of the original OO gauge model. The mathematically correct conversion from OO to TT:120 is approximately 63.33%, meaning that our TT:120 models are intentionally slightly oversized.

We use the 66% scaling factor because the material thickness required for a true 63.33% reduction is not readily available. By using 66% scaling and 2 mm plywood, we can offer our full range of kits in TT:120 while maintaining the correct fit and assembly of the original designs, without the manual modifications required for our O gauge kits.
This means our TT:120 models are approximately 4.2% larger than mathematically exact 1:120 scale, but this allows us to retain the design detail, strength and ease of assembly of our kits.

N Gauge:
Scaling to N gauge works well and requires no additional modifications due to the material thickness. Some parts will be very fine, so take care when removing them from the frame. If some window pieces are particularly fine, they can be reinforced by soaking them in glue before assembly.

O Gauge Orders:
When scaling to O gauge, some manual modifications may be required during assembly. This is due to the increased material thickness required when scaling from the 3 mm plywood used for OO gauge. At true O gauge scale, the equivalent material thickness would be approximately 5.25 mm. As this thickness of plywood is not readily available, we use the closest available thickness, 4 mm plywood.

Each design is modified to account for the reduced material thickness, but some manual adjustment may still be required during assembly. We recommend dry-fitting the parts before gluing so that any joints that require light sanding can be identified and adjusted for a flush finish.
